February 18th 10.30-4.30 Electroforming for Jewellery and Craftspeople Skill Level: No experience required
Electroformingis a developmentof electroplating,where metal is deposited into a mould or mandrel thick enough to eventually make a free standing item in itself. This class will look at the basic of electroplating and electroforming and assumes no previous knowledge or experience. We will look a basic chemistry and equipment for electroplating and electroforming in a small workshop. Safety and precautions. The class will cover the materials and methods for electroforming, looking at expendable and permanent mandrels (shapes) and moulds. 2D and 3D electroforming as well as mould and mandrel materials and making. Plating tanks and equipment, suppliers and sources as well as methods and techniques. Other areas covered will be measurement and monitoring of solutions and plating thickness,mostly with acid copper but will also look at nickel, silver and goldplating too. Please note this a technical class and due to time involved in the making process you won't make a finished item The class will take place at the Military Metalwork workshop at 11 Crown Court Leeds LS2 7DG refreshments but not lunch provided
