Make a Pestle and Mortar

Our research found that at No 40 Coney Street, or current shop, lived a Druggist and Chemist Thomas Fall and his wife.

A key part of the pharmacist’s equipment in the 19th Century chemist shop. Used to crush various herbs and roots to use in ointments or medicines.

Our tutor Margaret Glackin is an experienced and qualified Leeds based ceramicist.  She will lead you through the process of making your own hand built ceramic Pestle and Mortar.

On the day you will learn how to prepare the clay prior to hand building using pinching and coiling techniques.  Using various tools required to complete the task.

The Pestle and Mortar will be fired off site at Margaret’s studio and will be available for collection at a later date.

This workshop has been funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and is free. However places are limited and a £10 deposit is required to book, refundable on attendance.
