10th June 2026 – Bookbinding Class: Making the Naughty List – a 16th-Century stationery binding
Bookbinding Classes, Classes York, Craft Classes, Exhibitions and Events, Exhibitions and Events in York, Heritage Craft Skills Workshops, Heritage Crafts Workshops, Past classes3 hour class Max 10 participants, £40 a ticket. Originally used to list the priests who did not attend mass in the Vatican, recreate this surprisingly modern looking late medieval/ early modern binding based on a surviving example in the Vatican library. This class will take you through preparing your pages, sewing, lining your cover with decorative papers as well as creating an elaborately cut label for the cover. Suitable for complete beginners to bookbinding. Ages 16+ This class will be held in Fabrication York at 32 Stonegate, York YO1 8AS Access: The Fabrication shop has 3 steps up from the street and 2 further steps inside to access the rear of the shop. The class area is located at the rear of the shop floor. Toilets are on the first floor and accessed via stairs only. -
£3.00Make your own runic leather bookmark using historical bookbinding and early medieval leather-working techniques. Suitable for ages 7-70+ (younger children may be able to complete the tasks with help from their accompanying adult) Cost: £3 per bookmark of £5 for two. Get inducted into the bindery as an apprentice. Then choose from a variety of tools to impress your marks into undyed leather. Guidance in using the futhark phonetic runic alphabet and a few stock phrases will be available to use if desired. Try out the technique on a some scrap leather, then create your masterpiece. Participants will take away a leather bookmark. All tools and materials provided. Drop-in, no need to book, although if the space gets busy you may be required to wait.
