‘Beyond Normal’

‘Beyond Normal’ showcases the collective works of local artists Lincoln Lightfoot and Reid Bennington beginning with the exclusive preview on Friday 10th May 6-9pm and then throughout the following week Sat 11th-Sun 19th May from 10am-5pm daily.

‘Beyond Normal’ follows creatures in unusual situations and confronts the absurdity of the now! The exhibition offers a comical style of escapism from everyday problems and promises to be an exciting and enjoyable for art lovers of all ages!

Inspired by a love of b-movie poster art Lightfoot depicts unusual happenings staged in well-known settings whilst tapping into the present condition of fear that our news media and politicians perpetuate in a post Covid-19 world.

Bennington’s work follows humanoid animal creatures complete with animated expression in comical scenarios.  Illustrations and 3D works fascinate, engage and are oddly relatable.

Our York exhibition space is situated on the first floor, accessibly via 2 flights of stairs, of the York Fabrication Retail space, 19 Coney St, York, YO1 9QL, within a 2 minute walk to buses and a 10 minute walk to car parks and to York Railway Station, surrounded by other independent shops, bars and restaurants and in the heart of York City Centre.

    Sunday 7th April 2024 : 13:30-16:30 £35 a head. Maximum 8 participants. Hot drinks included. Suitable for beginners but some previous craft experience is helpful. Make your own miniature book. All the fun of bookbinding at a fraction of the size. This class will take your through the basics of making a miniature case binding, using book cloth and decorative paper. All materials will be provided but participants are very welcome to bring their own paper to incorporate into their bindings if suitable. Create your very own tiny tome. Tomes can have jump rings added if you would like to turn your tome into a book themed necklace or brooch. A short fun class aimed at beginners. This class will be held in Fabrication York at 19 Coney St, York YO1 9QL Access: The Fabrication shop has level access to the street. The class area is on the first floor accessed via 2 flights of stairs. Toilets are on the first floor and accessed via three sets of fire doors.     Book paper rose Workshop Sun 3rd March 11.15 - 1.15pm
    Join Laura from L & S Crafts (2) Facebook at Fabrication York in York city centre, for a fun, informative workshop to learn how to make paper roses from your choice of book paper, sheet music or maps. The finished roses will then be mounted on wire stems and taped to give a neat finish.
    You will develop the skills to make further roses at home. Book paper flowers make lovely gifts, home decorations or even wedding bouquets. Perfect for weddings, first wedding anniversaries, or just to treat yourself!
    All equipment and materials will be provided, however if you have a favourite book or piece of music that you would like to incorporate, feel free to bring it along.
    Hot drinks will be available.
    Minimum age for participants is 18 years.

    'Right here, right now. It's historical, big, huge and beautiful' 

    looks at the community in the environment of a walled garden which is run by Brunswick – a place that provides a work-like environment for adults with learning disabilities. The team cares for it year-round: creating wood-worked items, growing vegetables to sell in their own shop and developing the garden. They have been doing this for nearly twenty years.

    My aim is to collaborate with the Brunswick community on how they are seen on their own terms without relying on the societal label that's placed upon them. I also want the audience to discover the walled garden and reflect on it as a place that can give people their own agency and autonomy.

    I am examining themes of representation, community and visibility. Gardens have their own psychological effect, creating a place of sanctuary and growth on which individuals can base their own values.

    The walled garden is a contradictory place. On the one hand, it is a place most people walk or drive past every day without knowing it is there. But it is also a place where people can thrive, be validated and be seen on their own terms. The project also speaks to how people in underserved communities can be hidden and not hidden simultaneously within society.

    There are multiple traces of historical, natural and social layers to be discovered – vignettes of smaller environments within an already enclosed space on top of which sits the seasonal cycle of growth and renewal in cultivated and rewilded areas. Brunswick itself is only a small part of the story as the garden has existed in some form since the late 1700s.

    It is the basis of the desire of any group of human beings to have a place of their own, a place which gives them reality, presence, power of living, which feeds them, body and soul.

  • Spooncarving – Knife Carving Workshop

    Spooncarving - Knife Carving Workshop Sat 16th Sept 1.30 - 3.30pm Dave is an experienced woodcarver and has been running spooncarving sessions for the last 5yrs. The 2hr session is an introduction  to spooncarving and covers the knife skills required to safely carve your first spoon. You'll be guided through the process as Dave shows you how to use the straight and bent knife whilst carving a prepared blank.
