10th June 2026 – Bookbinding Class: Making the Naughty List – a 16th-Century stationery binding

Originally used as a list of priests who did not attend mass in the Vatican, come recreate this surprisingly modern looking late medieval/early modern binding based on a surviving example in the Vatican library. This class will take you through preparing your pages, sewing, lining your cover with decorative papers as well as creating an elaborately cut label for the cover. Leave the class with a period-appropriate 16th-Century binding, and skills to make many more. Suitable for complete beginners to bookbinding. Ages 16+ This class will be taught by Anachronalia. Based in Leeds, Anachronalia has been binding for over 15 years and teaching for over 10. With a background in medieval studies, she fuses historical techniques with modern materials to create her own range of books and stationery. This class will be held in Fabrication York at 32 Stonegate, York YO1 8AS Access: The Fabrication shop has 3 steps up from the street and 2 further steps inside to access the rear of the shop. Based on a 16th-Century book in the Vatican library, come make your own lay flat sketchbook, using only paper, card, needle, and thread. Along the way learn more about the types of books used by ordinary folk during the later medieval period for accounts, ledgers, and pocket notebooks. This class will be held in Fabrication York at 19 Coney St, York YO1 9QL Access: The Fabrication shop has level access to the street. The class area is on the first floor accessed via 2 flights of stairs (can potentially be moved into the shop area by request). £3.00Make your own runic leather bookmark using historical bookbinding and early medieval leather-working techniques. Suitable for ages 7-70+ (younger children may be able to complete the tasks with help from their accompanying adult) Cost: £3 per bookmark of £5 for two. Get inducted into the bindery as an apprentice. Then choose from a variety of tools to impress your marks into undyed leather. Guidance in using the futhark phonetic runic alphabet and a few stock phrases will be available to use if desired. Try out the technique on a some scrap leather, then create your masterpiece. Participants will take away a leather bookmark. All tools and materials provided. Drop-in, no need to book, although if the space gets busy you may be required to wait.
