Based on a 16th-Century book in the Vatican library, come make your own lay flat sketchbook, using only a folded card cover, drawing paper pages, and a deceptively simple looking sewing pattern. Along the way learn more about the types of books used by ordinary folk during the later medieval period for accounts, ledgers, and pocket notebooks.

This class will be held in Fabrication York at 19 Coney St, York YO1 9QL

Access: The Fabrication shop has level access to the street. The class area is on the first floor accessed via 2 flights of stairs. Toilets are on the first floor and accessed via three sets of fire doors. If you have any specific access queries, don’t hesitate to contact Anachronalia.

    Working With Fabric - Making Cloth Covered Books - 16th June 2024 16th June 2024: 10:30-17:30 (with a break for lunch) £70 a head. Maximum 8 participants. Hot drinks included. Suitable for beginners but some previous craft or bookbinding experience is helpful. All tools and materials provided. A creative class looking at how to turn your fabric scraps into decorative book cloth. We'll spend the morning looking at possible fabrics, what to look out for when choosing your fabric, and different methods for lining them for covering. In the afternoon, we'll move on to covering some test boards with different types of fabric and finally covering a pre-prepared text block to create your own finished cloth covered book. All materials are provided but participants are welcome to bring their own fabrics to work with, if suitable. This class will be held in Anachronalia’s city centre workshop Fabrication2 venue at Hereford House, 6 Edward St, Leeds LS2 7NT There are plenty of local eateries to take your lunch in, or you can bring a packed lunch and sit in the workshop itself. Access: the workshop is on the first floor, accessed via a short flight of stairs to the ground floor, then a larger flight of stairs with handrail accessed via a fire door.     Sunday 7th April 2024 : 13:30-16:30 £35 a head. Maximum 8 participants. Hot drinks included. Suitable for beginners but some previous craft experience is helpful. Make your own miniature book. All the fun of bookbinding at a fraction of the size. This class will take your through the basics of making a miniature case binding, using book cloth and decorative paper. All materials will be provided but participants are very welcome to bring their own paper to incorporate into their bindings if suitable. Create your very own tiny tome. Tomes can have jump rings added if you would like to turn your tome into a book themed necklace or brooch. A short fun class aimed at beginners.     Shaun Casey is from Leeds, the Hyde Park Headingley area, he went to the Leeds Metropolitan University where he gained my BA ( Hons) degree in graphic arts and design,  majoring in illustration,  He's always had an interest in drawing but never pursued in his younger years due to helping  bring up a young family. In  2011 he spent some of his spare time drawing the exhibits at the Royal Armouries in Leeds where his work was spotted by staff and an exhibition of his work at the Armouries ensued.
    This gave his confidence a lift and although it was stop start regarding drawing again, he picked up the pen once more in 2019 and started drawing animals in fine liner ink, he liked the control of the pen and the deep dark textures of the ink and before he knew it he started illustrating a book on WW1,  he have completed 62 A3 ink drawings on this his wife Lesley-Jane writing the back stories.
    They are hoping to publish the book later this year, he hopes all that see my work will find it aesthetically pleasing, he's never really thought of myself as an artist but a craftsman with a pen.
    Free Entry daily, 10 - 5pm The exhibition space is situated on the first floor, accessibly via 2 flights of stairs, of the York Fabrication Retail space, 19 Coney St, York, YO1 9QL, within a 2 minute walk to buses and a 10 minute walk to car parks and to York Railway Station, surrounded by other independent shops, bars and restaurants and in the heart of York City Centre.
